Varsity Soccer Falls to South Christian in Final

Game Date
Oct 12, 2011
Score
HAWKS: 1
SOUTH CHRISTIAN: 2

The Hawks travelled to South Christian on Wednesday night in a bid to win their first conference title since 2008, but fell short in a 2-1 loss.

The game began with scoring on a break-neck pace.  The Sailors got on the board just 6:08 into the game when a through ball into space led to a goal on a 1v1 with goalkeeper Nick Hopkins.

The Hawks kept composure and evened the score just 5:27 later.  Colton Johnson served a brilliant ball to Brendan McCoy, who chipped the goalkeeper from distance to earn his team-high 12th goal of the season.

The Sailors bounced back quickly, 3:12 later, as they finished a rebound that came off the crossbar.

From that point, the Hawks carried the play and launched an all-out assault with a 20-4 advantage in shots at goal for the remainder of the game.  Despite the constant attacks, FHE couldn't find the back of the net.

The final drama occured with 2 minutes remaining, as the Hawks were awarded a penalty kick.  But the Sailor goalkeeper was equal to the task and made a fantastic save in his lower-left corner.

With the loss, the Hawks finish conference play in 2nd Place with a 7-3-0 record in the OK Gold.  The team is 12-4-2 overall.

District play begins next week and FHE drew a bye for its first-round game.  The Hawks will play Forest Hills Northern in the Districts Semi-Final at FHN on Wednesday, October 19 at 6:45pm.

In the matinee game, the JV Hawks found themselves in a 2-0 deficit, despite having played some quality soccer.  Dealt another blow, the Hawks lost sweeper Carl Herdegen to injury, but showed much character over the course of the 2nd Half.  Jake Austin scored from distance to close the gap, but South Christian was able to hold on for a 2-1 win.
