Forest Hills Eastern and Calvin Christian renewed a long rivalry with a Saturday game in Grandville.
This was the 10th meeting of the two programs, with matches going back to FHE's inaugural season in 2004. Formerly OK Silver conference rivals, Calvin Christian held a 6-3-0 record in the series history.
In the 2010 affair, the Hawks came out with the upper hand in the first half. FHE held the edge in possession, but was unable to turn it into any outstanding scoring chances, despite outshooting the Knights 8-0 for the half.
The Hawks began the second half with some serious pressure on the Calvin defense, but the Knights stymied the attacks and created some chances of their own. Sophomore goalkeeper Nick Hopkins made two outstanding saves to keep the score at 0-0.
In the 55th minute, the Hawks carried the ball into their attacking third of the field. The ball was played to the corner onto the feet of Senior Brandon Underwood, who lofted a ball to the top of the 18. Sophomore Nate Loree showed terrific poise in settling the ball with his instep and driving a shot to the far post on his second touch. The shot took a deflection off of a Calvin defender and found its way into the side netting for Loree's first career game-winning goal.
The Hawks' defense took over, led by Ryan Scott, Grant Young, and Nick Richard. The Knights were stopped repeatedly as they sought to score the equalizer. After 80 minutes, it was FHE who would walk off with the 1-0 win. Hopkins recorded his first career shutout.
The Hawks play their next game at home on Tuesday versus Catholic Central in an OK Gold matchup. Tuesday is also Senior Night, where the team's 11 outstanding seniors will be recognized for their accomplishments. The festivities will take place around 6:25pm, with the game's kickoff coming at 6:45pm.
