The FHE Varsity Soccer Team renewed its rivalry with East Grand Rapids in its 1-0 victory over the Pioneers.
The Hawks played an excellent first half in terms of possession and creating scoring opportunities, but were held off the board until Senior Brandon Underwood scored his 3rd goal of the season in the 16th minute.
FHE continued to pressure in its attacking third, taking 14 shots at goal in the first half, but were unable to add another to its total before halftime. Goalkeeper Kip Forness and his defense held EGR scoreless in the first half.
The second half saw the Pioneers come to life, creating opportunities of their own. The Hawks defended well, clinging to the one-goal lead.
With about 10 minutes left in the contest, EGR swung a cross from the corner into the box followed by a magnificent side volley from 12 yards out to the near post. Sophomore goalkeeper Nick Hopkins displayed fine footwork in working from one post to the other, just in time to make a brilliant save in what was one of the finest sequences in the match.
The Hawks managed to hold onto its shutout with fine performances from Backs Ryan Scott, Nick Richard, Grant Young, and Spencer Hansen.
FHE takes a 2-1-2 lead in the series history with EGR and brings its 2010 season record to 2-1-0.
