Forest Hills Eastern traveled across town to the west side to take on the Union Red Hawks in a non-conference tilt. The Red Hawks are from the OK Black conference while the Eastern Hawks are out of the OK Bronze. The game was played at Union High School in front of a sparse Tuesday night crowd.
In the first quarter Eastern jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead on the strength of some strong shooting. But the Red Hawks fought back to take a 13-12 lead after the first period. Josh Karafa lead the Hawks hitting two 3-pointers giving him 6 points on the quarter. The Red Hawks were lead by DeQuaveon Stuckey with 8 points. In the 2nd quarter the Red Hawks continued their scoring run but had some foul trouble and had to find scoring other than Stuckey. They did just that as Keidron Davis tallied 7 points and Ramiro Barajas hit two 3-pointers off the bench. But the Hawks hung tough and stayed with the Red Hawks on their home court getting scoring from 7 different players in the quarter. Chase Krueger lead the way with 5 points in the 2nd quarter. The Red Hawks lead at the half 33-31.
Both teams came out and battled in the 3rd period but not many shots were falling for either team. Each team scored 11 in the quarter and Hawks remained down by a bucket 44-42 heading into the final stanza. In the 3rd the Hawks were lead by Stephen Glover with 8 points and some very strong play in the post. The Red Hawks got 7 points from Jeffery Lee. The final period was a see-saw battle for most of the quarter until the Eastern Hawks grabbed command of the game at the line. The Hawks made their first 14 free throws in the 4th quarter and outscored the Red Hawks 23-17 to seal the win 65-61. The Hawks shot a scorching 15/16=94% in the 4th quarter and finished 20/25=80% for the game. Union was only 4/10=40% from the free throw line for the game.
Eastern was lead by Stephen Glover with a double-double (15 points / 10 rebounds). Steven Harvey (13 points / 5 rebounds) and Josh Karafa (13 points / 7 rebounds) also had strong games for the Hawks. The Read Hawks had 3 players in double figures with Keidron Davis (14 points), DeQuaveon Stuckey (13 points) and Jeffery Lee (11 points) leading the way for Union.
The Forest Hill Eastern now travel to face their cross-district rivals Friday night at Forest Hills Northern in an OK Bronze rematch from earlier this year. The Hawks beat the Huskies in that match up and the Huskies will be looking for some revenge in the rematch.
