Game Recap

In the final game of the season for both teams the FH Eastern Hawks traveled to Wyoming to take on the Wolves in an OK Gold conference battle. The Hawks had never lost to the Wolves in the schools history carrying a 4-0 record into the game against Wyoming. Wyoming was looking to change the history under new head coach Irv Sigler.

The game was a back and forth contest with the Hawks striking first on a long drive capped off by a senior Caden Peters TD run. The Wolves answered but the Hawks scored again before the half to take a 14-7 lead into halftime. The Wolves however made some adjustments in their Wing-T offense and in the 2nd half pounded the ball on the ground. Wyoming scored twice and converted a huge 2-point conversion on the 2nd TD to make the score 22-14 late in the game. The 2-point conversion would turn out to be the deciding factor in the game. The Hawks answered with a potential game-tying TD but could not convert their 2-point conversion attempt with :33 left in the game. Senior QB Bennett VanSolkema’s pass was over the head of intended receiver senior Ben Armbrester and fell harmlessly to the turf. The final was 22-20 in favor of the Wolves.

The Hawks offense was lead by the ground attack of Peters who rushed for 115 yards on 27 carries and 2 rushing TD’s. VanSolkema rushed for 55 yards on 11 carries. He also threw for 155 yards on 9-20 and 1 TD. Armbrester hauled in 3 passes for 82 yards. Junior Andy Schilling caught one pass for 15 yards and a TD.

The Hawks defense battled all night long and was lead by Senior Cray Brenner with 7.5 tackles. Senior Justin Rozeboom added 6.5 tackles. Senior Scott Massie chipped in with 6.0 tackles and 1.0 for a loss.

The Hawks finish the 2017 season at 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the tough OK Gold. The Wolves also ended up at 3-6 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

A special thanks to all the seniors that played their last FHE football game and to the families that have supported the team all year. Go Hawks!

Game Recap

The Hawks traveled to East Grand Rapids and Pioneers welcomed them for their 2017 Homecoming game. The Pioneers came into the game 7-0 and ranked #2 in the state in Division 3. The Hawks were looking to win their final two regular season games, starting with their first ever win against EGR, to put themselves into a possible playoff position. However the Pioneers had a different idea and took care of the Hawks 35-0.

The Hawks offense sputtered most of the night and much of that can be attributed to the stout and fast Pioneer defense. Turnovers played a large role in the outcome as well as the Hawks threw 2 interceptions (one for a pick 6) and 2 lost fumbles. The Hawks managed only 4 first downs all night to the Pioneers 14 and the 140 in total offense the Hawks managed was their lowest total of the year.

The Hawks Bennett VanSolkema lead the Hawks on the ground with 58-yards rushing on 8 attempts. He also threw for 68-yards on 7-15 passing. Brady Doyle hauled in 3 of those passes for 45 yards.

The Hawks final game of the season will be next Friday night in Wyoming. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00p. The Hawks record is now 3-5 and they will look to round out the 2017 season on a winning note against a tough Wolves team.
