Game Recap

The FH Eastern Hawks traveled across town to take on the Tri-Unity Christian Defenders. The game was the final regular season game for both teams and was played at Tri-Unity’s current gym. The gym is referred to as the the “Box” due to it’s small footprint and low ceiling. It would be the last game ever played at that gym as Tri-Unity is constructing a new facility a few miles down the road. The “Box” has a lot of history as the Defenders have played there for 33 years, winning 111 championships including in multiple sports and also holding a 74 game home win streak for boys varsity basketball a few years back.

The game Thursday night started off in the Hawks favor as they jumped out to a 7-2 lead early. But that lead would be short lived as the Defenders strung together a 12-0 run to finish the quarter with a 14-7 lead. The Defenders kept the heat on in the 2nd quarter and continued to build on their lead. The Defenders were up 32-21 at the half.

The 2nd half went much as the 1st half did and Tri-Unity continued to knock down shots. The Hawks struggled from the line the entire game shooting 6/13=46% and also missing several front ends of 1-and-1’s. The Defenders on the other hand shot 19/21=90% from the charity strip for the game. Tri-Unity lead 45-27 after three quarters of play. Then outscored the Hawks 17-10 in the final stanza to make the final 62-37. The Hawks turned the ball over 21 times and also gave up 10 offensive rebounds. Those additional possessions combined with poor shooting from the free-throw line were the under-lying story of the game.

The Hawks were lead by junior Nich Hakken with 8 points and 5 rebounds. Freshman Solomon White also added 8 points. The Hawks leading scorer, senior Grant Trisch, was held to 5 points and added 3 assists. Bennett VanSolkema came off the bench to come up with 6 steals in the 2nd half.

The Hawks finish the regular season now at 4-16 overall and 2-8 in the OK Gold conference. The Hawks next game will be on Monday night at Comstock Park High School as they move into district play. They will play the West Catholic Falcons in the opening round game. The Falcons enter the game 3-17 after closing out their regular season this week. The winner will face Grand Rapids Catholic Central on Wednesday evening.
