Game Recap

Winter was settling back in for the weekend when the Hawks traveled southwest to take on the Wayland Wildcats on Friday night. The temperatures were dropping outside but both teams inside didn’t let it bother them as they heated up the gym at Wayland. It would be the final OK Gold game for both teams and also was senior night for the home Wildcats. And Wayland’s senior Avery Hudson would put on a show like no other.

The Hawks started by jumping out to a lead early in the 1st period and at one point lead 13-8 over the Wildcats with 3:00 minutes to play in the quarter. The run was powered by sophomore Taylor Mitchell’s two 3’s and senior Grant Trisch’s 5 points. Junior Scott Massie came off the bench to give the Hawks good minutes in the middle and also scored 3 points. The Wildcats senior center Zack Nieuwkoop received his 2nd foul and that took him out of the game for most of the rest of the half. However that turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the Wildcats as Hudson went to work. He lead the Wildcats with 13 points in the quarter.

The Hawks did their best to hang with the Wildcats in the fast paced, up and down game but the Wildcats took command of the game in the 2nd period stretching their lead to 50-35. The Wildcats 29 2nd quarter points were the most allowed by the Hawks all season. Junior Nick Hakken knocked down 10 points for the Hawks. But it was Hudson again who lead the Wildcats, this time pouring in 23 points in the quarter to give him 36 points at the half.

The cut the Wildcats lead to 12 in the 3rd quarter but that was as close as they could get. Trisch scored 5 points in the quarter to lead the Hawks. Hudson lead the Wildcats with 7 points. The Hawks trailed Wayland 67-46 heading into the 4th quarter.

The Hawks managed one of their best quarters of the year in the 4th scoring 25 points lead by freshman Solomon White with 5 points. Juniors Joey VanBoxtel and Bennett VanSolkema both also got into the score book knocking down a bucket each. However it was too little too late as the Wildcats rolled to an 86 -71 victory. Hudson added 10 more points in the 4th quarter to push his game high total to 53 points on the night. Hudson’s efforts were a school record for the Wildcats.

The Hawks again had 4 players score in double figure to only one for the Wildcats. The Hawks were lead in scoring by Hakken with 18 points and 9 rebounds. Senior Myles Olson added 13 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals and 4 assists. White added 12 points and 2 rebounds while Trisch chipped in 11 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. The Hawks are now off until next Thursday when they travel to Tri-Unity Christian for their final regular season game. That game will also mark the final game ever played at Tri-Unity’s current gym. Game time will be around 7:00 pm after the JV contest. The following week the Hawks enter district play at Comstock Park.
